The Aftermath of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi’s Death

The nation is in mourning following the sudden death of Ernest Kumi, the 40-year-old Member of Parliament for Akwatia. Kumi rushed to Lister Hospital around 2 a.m. after experiencing severe chest pains.
Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead by 10 a.m. His body has since been transferred to the Lashibi Funeral Home.

Kumi’s untimely death comes just after he had completed his law exams last week and celebrated a significant Supreme Court victory that allowed him to fully resume his parliamentary duties after a prolonged legal battle. Unconfirmed reports suggest that he died from a heart attack.

A petition challenging the election results was filed by Henry Boakye-Yiadom on December 31, 2024. The Koforidua High Court issued an interim injunction on January 2, 2025, barring Kumi from being sworn in as an MP due to the ongoing legal contest. Despite this, Kumi presented himself in Parliament to be sworn in on January 7, 2025, leading to a contempt conviction by the Koforidua High Court on February 19, 2025. However, the Supreme Court later quashed the contempt conviction and nullified the bench warrant issued against him, allowing Kumi to resume his duties.
