Ghana’s National Teaching Council Clarifies Licensure Examination Process

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has provided an update on the Teacher Licensure Examination, dispelling rumors of its abolition. Instead, the NTC will conduct the examination as part of in-school final exams. A key component of the new system is the inclusion of Teaching Practice in the licensure score, which will determine whether a candidate is awarded a teaching license.

Examination Details
– Pass Mark: The pass mark for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) is 52%. Candidates who score 52% or higher will be awarded a teaching license.
– Examination Structure: The GTLE consists of three main components:
– General Professional Knowledge: Covers numeracy, literacy, and essential professional skills.
– Pedagogy: Focuses on pedagogical knowledge, with questions tailored to the candidate’s area of specialization.
– Subject-Based Paper: Tests the candidate’s proficiency in their subject area or multiple subjects, depending on their specialization.
– Registration and Fees: Registration for the 2025 GTLE is currently ongoing, with fees ranging from GH¢150 for a single paper to GH¢450 for three papers.
– Teaching Practice: Now a crucial component of the licensure score, emphasizing the importance of practical teaching experience.

Implications for Teacher Trainees
The NTC’s decision to maintain the licensure examination underscores its commitment to ensuring that prospective teachers meet the required standards. By incorporating Teaching Practice into the licensure score, the Council aims to assess candidates’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
