Earlier today, at the maiden edition of the Government of Ghana Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House in Accra, the Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarack, delivered a comprehensive update on the achievements of the Ministry of the Interior. The event highlighted several key milestones that underscore the Ministry’s commitment to security, public service delivery, and national development.
Enhanced National Security
The Ministry has successfully reduced the number of curfew-imposed areas in the country from 11 to 5, demonstrating improved dialogue, stability, and peacebuilding in previously affected communities.
Legislative Milestones
The Ministry spearheaded the amendment of the Public Holidays Act to include an extra day for Eid-ul-Fitr and restore July 1st as a national holiday. This move strengthens inclusivity and preserves Ghana’s national heritage.
Digital Transformation
The Ministry has initiated the digitalization of 16 core functions, including permit and license services, aimed at enhancing transparency, eliminating delays, and improving public access to services.
Humanitarian Action
In collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ministry repatriated 2,241 street beggars to their home countries, promoting public order and offering support to vulnerable individuals.
Youth Empowerment
The Ministry signed an MoU with the Ministry of Youth Development for Security Agency Internships, creating pathways for youth employability while supporting national security. Additionally, the Ministry is set to finalize another MoU with the Ministry of Education to enable the Ghana Prisons Service to produce 20% of the sanitary pads required for the Government’s Free Sanitary Pad Initiative.
Police Achievements
The Ghana Police Service has made remarkable progress, including sustained anti-illegal mining operations, the establishment of a 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, intelligence-led anti-robbery operations across all regions, and breakthroughs in major criminal cases.
Prison Reforms
The Ghana Prisons Service has launched juvenile and secondary education programs, a digital literacy initiative for inmates, officers, and dependents, and completed the Damongo Correctional Facility, easing congestion and improving rehabilitation services.
Combating Narcotics
The Narcotics Control Commission has disrupted major trafficking operations, seizing 192kg of cocaine, 90kg of cannabis, and 17.9kg of gold bars.
Disaster Management
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has responded to 332 emergencies, conducted extensive field assessments, and provided relief to over 11,524 victims, enhancing Ghana’s disaster preparedness and resilience.
National Identification Progress
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has registered over 18 million Ghanaians, cleared 600,000 backlogged registrations, and introduced Prestige Registration Services. It has also deployed advanced physical and cyber security infrastructure to safeguard national identity systems.
These accomplishments are part of the Ministry’s contribution to the Reset Ghana Agenda as championed by H.E. John Dramani Mahama. The Ministry reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to peace, security, and service to the people of Ghana.
