Suame Post Office Market in Kumasi Devastated by Fire

A devastating fire outbreak occurred at the Suame Post Office Market in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The blaze, which started around 11 pm, ravaged over 300 shops, causing losses estimated to run into millions of cedis.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with traders and residents watching helplessly as their shops and goods were consumed by the flames. Some nearby residents rushed to the scene and forced open shops around the market in a bid to salvage items before the fire reached them.

Cause of the Fire Still Unknown
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but the rapid spread was fueled by the explosion of over 30 gas cylinders. Firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control, but not before it had destroyed a significant portion of the market.

Victims Express Frustration
Traders expressed anger and frustration over the perceived late response of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). Many believe that if the fire service had arrived earlier, the damage could have been minimized. “We called for help earlier, but the fire service came late. By then, everything was gone,” one distraught eyewitness said.

Call for Fire Station
The incident has reignited calls for a fire station to be established in the Suame Industrial area. Artisans and traders argue that the absence of a nearby fire station contributed to the extensive damage. A previously existing fire station was relocated to a farther destination, making timely responses to emergencies difficult.

Government Response
While there has been no official statement from the government, the incident highlights the need for urgent action to address fire safety concerns in the area. The Ghana National Fire Service is still investigating the cause of the fire.
