The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Ghana has announced a significant change to the country’s vehicle registration system. Starting January 1, 2026, vehicle registration numbers will become permanent personal IDs for vehicle owners. According to DVLA CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey, owners will retain their registration numbers even when transferring vehicles.
Key Features of the New System:
– Permanent Registration Numbers: Vehicle owners will keep their registration numbers for life, eliminating the need for changes when selling or transferring vehicles.
– Zonal Codes: The new plates will display the region where the vehicle is registered, followed by a unique four-digit number and an area code. For example, “Greater Accra” will be displayed at the top of the plate, with “GR 2224-AD” below, indicating the Adenta zone.
– Improved Security: The change aims to enhance vehicle identification and reduce fraudulent activities. The DVLA has also introduced reflective sticker number plates with advanced security features, including QR code verification and tamper-proof design.
Benefits of the New System:
– Easier Vehicle Identification: The permanent registration numbers will make it easier for authorities to trace vehicles involved in crimes.
– Increased Efficiency: The new system will eliminate discrepancies at ports and ensure accurate records of vehicles issued with plates.
– Reduced Misuse: The DVLA aims to limit the misuse of “DV” plates, previously issued to dealers, by encouraging proper registration among private owners.
