Accra, Ghana – A recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed the top 10 institutions where officials are most likely to demand bribes. The Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service tops the list, with a staggering 51.9% of interactions involving bribes. General duties police officers follow closely at 37.4%, while the Passport Office ranks third at 29.9%.

The report, part of the GSS’s Governance Series Wave 1 Report, highlights widespread corruption in public services. Other institutions on the list include the Traffic Management Authority (28.9%), Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority (28.0%), Births & Deaths Registry (23.8%), Forestry Commission (23.7%), Food & Drugs Authority (22.2%), DVLA (20.2%), and the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) (19.9%).

The study found that 18.4% of Ghanaians who interacted with public officials in 2024 paid bribes, mostly in cash, with urban areas and men more likely to be affected. The GSS urges systemic reforms to restore public trust.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has launched a toll-free line for citizens to report corruption cases, emphasizing the need for accountability.
