Dutch Court Approves U.S. Extradition of Ghana MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong Over Fraud, Scam Charges

An Amsterdam court has reportedly granted a U.S. request to extradite Ohene Kwame Frimpong, MP for Asante Akyem North, to face federal charges in the United States.

According to reports, the charges include fraud, money laundering, and offences linked to romance scams. The court’s decision removes a key legal barrier to his transfer to U.S. custody.

What we know so far
Mr. Frimpong was arrested in the Netherlands earlier this year after U.S. authorities issued an extradition request. He has since contested the request in Dutch courts. The latest ruling means he can now be handed over to American law enforcement for prosecution.

Details of the U.S. indictment have not yet been made public. Proceedings are expected to begin once he appears before a U.S. federal court.

Official response
Parliament has not commented on the ruling. A senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told reporters that the government “takes note of the decision and will follow due process.”

Attempts to contact Mr. Frimpong’s lawyers and his parliamentary office in Agogo were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

Due process
The allegations have not been proven in court. Under both Ghanaian and U.S. law, Mr. Frimpong is presumed innocent until a court determines otherwise.

Political implications
Mr. Frimpong, a first-term MP, won the Asante Akyem North seat in the 2024 general elections. His case is likely to raise questions in Parliament about the status of his seat if legal proceedings in the U.S. are prolonged.

No timeline has been given for his transfer to the United States.
