Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been arrested by the police. The circumstances surrounding his arrest are unclear, but it comes days after he filed applications for political asylum in eight countries, citing consistent and escalating political persecution by the current government.
Abronye had claimed that he and his family face imminent and grave danger in Ghana, prompting him to seek international protection. In his asylum petitions, he alleged systemic abuse of state security powers by the government, which he believes warrants international intervention.
This isn’t Abronye’s first brush with the law. In February 2022, he was detained and charged with publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace. The charges stemmed from a radio interview where he accused former President John Mahama of plotting a coup.
Recent Controversies:
– Asylum Claims: Abronye has applied for asylum in eight countries, including the US, UK, and Canada, citing political persecution.
– Previous Arrests: He has been invited by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) over allegations of corruption against President Mahama.
– Supreme Court Action: Abronye has also taken the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and NIB to the Supreme Court over alleged excessive bail terms.
