Accra High Court Halts Daddy Lumba’s Burial Amid Family Dispute

The Accra High Court has granted an injunction filed by the maternal family of the late Ghanaian musician Daddy Lumba, temporarily halting his burial. The court has stopped the first respondent, Kofi Owusu, from organizing the burial and has also prevented Transitions Funeral Home from releasing Daddy Lumba’s body from the mortuary until the substantive case is determined.
The maternal family, led by Obaapanyin Afia Adomah, Robert Gyamfi, Georgina Gyamfi, Ernestina Fosuh, and Nana Afia Kobi, had filed the injunction, citing exclusion from funeral arrangements and disputes over the management of funds. The court has ordered the first respondent to organize a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to establish a new burial date.
The dispute reflects longstanding Akan traditions that assign substantial authority to the maternal lineage in burial matters. The court has also instructed that all funds collected for the funeral be kept separate from the accounts of the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation.
Daddy Lumba, a renowned highlife musician, passed away on July 26, 2025, at the age of 60. His burial was initially scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025, but the court ruling has put the plans on hold.
