Activist Slams Government Over National Cultural Convention Centre

Ghanaian social activist and lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has expressed strong reservations about the proposed National Cultural Convention Centre. According to Barker-Vormawor, the project is a “vanity project” that doesn’t align with the country’s pressing needs, particularly in healthcare.

Concerns About the Project
– Lack of Value Proposition: Barker-Vormawor questions the project’s value, citing that 90% of the costs were allegedly stolen, and despite spending 340 million cedis, there’s little progress.
– Exorbitant Costs: The project’s estimated cost has ballooned from $100 million to $1 billion, which Barker-Vormawor believes is unjustifiable given Ghana’s current economic situation.
– Misplaced Priorities: He argues that investing in healthcare infrastructure would be more beneficial, highlighting that many hospitals are ill-equipped and doctors face challenges in providing critical care.

Alternative Solution
– Revamping National Theatre: Barker-Vormawor suggests allocating a small fraction (0.5%) of the estimated budget to revamp the National Theatre and investing the rest in healthcare infrastructure.
– Prioritizing Healthcare: He emphasizes the need for a “proper 24-hour hospital” to address Ghana’s healthcare challenges.

Barker-Vormawor’s criticism of the National Cultural Convention Centre reflects broader concerns about government spending and priorities in Ghana. His advocacy for healthcare infrastructure development highlights the need for a balanced approach to national development.
