Ghana’s Attorney General has revealed that a raid on Akonta Mining site, linked to Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, uncovered GH¢157,000 in cash, gold, and eight pump-action guns, among other items. The operation, conducted by the Ghana Police Service on April 16, 2025, also seized 25 serviceable excavators, four machetes, and several water pumping machines.
According to the Attorney General’s report, the mining site was allegedly operating illegally, with some individuals named as overseers of the devastation. Chairman Wontumi has been rearrested and is expected to face charges related to illegal mining. The AG’s office detailed that Henry Okum, a suspect in custody, claimed Chairman Wontumi permitted him to undertake mining activities without obtaining necessary licenses.
This discovery forms part of a broader crackdown on illegal mining in Ghana, with the government vowing to take decisive action against those responsible for environmental degradation. Akonta Mining’s bank accounts have been frozen by the Financial Intelligence Centre amid allegations of money laundering and illicit financial activities.
