Accra, Ghana – In a move announced on September 1, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama has removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office. The decision was made in accordance with Article 146(9) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
According to a statement from Presidency Communications, the removal follows the receipt of a report from a committee constituted under Article 146(6). This committee was tasked with investigating a petition submitted by Ghanaian citizen Mr. Daniel Ofori regarding alleged misconduct by the Chief Justice. After reviewing the petition and evidence, the committee found grounds for the stated misbehavior under Article 146(1) and recommended her removal.
Under Article 146(9) of the constitution, the President is required to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendation. The announcement was made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
The removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo takes immediate effect, as stated in the release from Presidency Communications dated September 1, 2025.
