China Scraps All Tariffs on Goods from 53 African Countries

In a landmark move to strengthen trade ties with Africa, China has announced the removal of all import tariffs on goods from 53 African countries, excluding Eswatini, which maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The decision was made by Chinese President Xi Jinping and announced on June 11, 2025, at the Ministerial Meeting of Coordinators on the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Changsha, Hunan Province.

Key Highlights:
– Tariff-Free Initiative: China will grant zero-tariff treatment to 100% of taxable products from 53 African countries with diplomatic ties.
– Boost to African Exports: The move is expected to significantly increase African exports to China, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing.
– Middle-Income Economies Benefit: The policy expands duty-free access to middle-income African economies, including Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco.
– Strategic Move: China’s decision is seen as a strategic counterbalance to growing trade tensions with the West and a bid to deepen economic cooperation with Africa.

Impact on African Countries:
– Increased Export Opportunities: African countries like Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa are poised to benefit from increased export opportunities, potentially stimulating greater production, investment, and job creation.
– Diversification of Exports: The move may encourage African countries to diversify their exports beyond raw materials, promoting industrialization and economic growth.
– Challenges Remain: However, African countries still face challenges in meeting China’s import quality standards and maintaining efficient logistics.

China’s Growing Trade Ties with Africa:
– Trade Volume: Trade between China and Africa stood at approximately $296 billion in 2024, with China importing raw materials like copper, cobalt, and oil, and exporting electronics, textiles, and industrial machinery.
