Court Remands NPP’s Kwame Baffoe “Abronye”

The Accra Circuit Court has remanded Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), into police custody until Friday, September 12, 2025. Abronye was arraigned before the court on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, facing charges of “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace”.

Background of the Arrest
The Ghana Police Service arrested Abronye on Monday, September 8, 2025, after inviting him to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters for questioning. His lawyers claim he was questioned over statements he allegedly made against the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohonu. A video containing his remarks was reportedly played during the session.

Possible Charges and Reactions
While the police haven’t disclosed the specific conduct that led to the arrest, sources suggest Abronye might face charges of publication of false news and breach of peace, tied to his outspoken criticism of the IGP and security services. His lawyers have described the detention as “politically motivated,” and some NPP members have expressed concerns about the timing of the arrest, especially after Abronye filed for political asylum in eight countries, citing alleged persecution and threats to his life.

Next Steps
Abronye’s legal team will likely push for clarity on his status and possible bail conditions in the coming days. The case has drawn significant public attention, with many awaiting the outcome.
