#Ghana Police Arrest Suspect in Assault of JoyNews Journalist

Accra, Ghana – In a significant development, the Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the assault of JoyNews journalist, Latif Iddrisu. The arrest was made on June 7, 2025, following investigations into the incident.
According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the suspect, identified as Theophilus Thompson, aged 55, was arrested at James Town in Accra. Thompson is currently in custody and is assisting the police with their investigation.
The assault on Iddrisu occurred on May 27, 2025, during a demonstration in front of the EOCO Office in Accra. The protesters, who were supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were demonstrating against the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi.
During the protest, Iddrisu, who was covering the event for JoyNews, was confronted and assaulted by some of the demonstrators. The police have since launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify and arrest other individuals involved.
The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring that anyone who engages in acts of violence against media personnel or any member of the public is brought to justice.
This development is a welcome relief for the journalism community in Ghana, who have been concerned about the safety of journalists in the country. The arrest of the suspect is a clear indication that the police are taking the matter seriously and are committed to holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
