Ghana Police Service Cracks Down on Illegal Mining in Eastern Region

The Ghana Police Service has successfully conducted an intelligence-led operation against illegal mining activities in Ankaase Gyadam, near Asamang Tamfoe in the Eastern Region. On Friday, July 25, 2025, twenty-seven male suspects were arrested for engaging in galamsey activities at various sites in the area.

Operation Highlights
– Arrests: 27 male suspects arrested for illegal mining activities
– Equipment Seized: 11 excavators, 1 bulldozer, 1 pump-action shotgun, 3 saloon vehicles, 1 Mitsubishi pickup truck, 1 pick loader, several water pumping machines, and other mining equipment
– Confrontation: Some suspects attempted to obstruct and attack police officers with machetes and other offensive implements

Investigation and Custody
All suspects are currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations. The seized exhibits are being held in secure storage as evidence. This operation forms part of the Ghana Police Service’s renewed efforts to combat illegal mining, which poses significant environmental and security threats to the country.

Police Efforts
The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced that some police officers who were believed to have compromised their positions in the fight against illegal mining have been replaced with energetic and disciplined officers. The police have also been working to support the newly formed National Illegal Mining Oversight Structure (NIMOS) in their efforts to protect Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.
