The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana is gearing up for its presidential primaries, and tensions are running high. Recent comments made by Dr. Otchere have sparked controversy, as he accused 220 former NPP Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) of being “politically prostitutes”. These MMDCEs allegedly received support from Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong but then went on to declare their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
This verbal spat highlights the intense rivalry within the NPP as candidates vie for support ahead of the primaries. Kennedy Agyapong recently met with 268 former MMDCEs, where he outlined his vision for Ghana and emphasized job creation, economic empowerment, and decentralization. Agyapong also criticized the excessive centralization of decision-making in Accra, promising to give MMDCEs more autonomy to address local development priorities if elected ¹.
The upcoming primaries promise to be a closely contested race, with several candidates, including Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, vying for the party’s nomination. The Krobo Odumase proverb, “When the wind blows, it exposes the anus of a fowl,” suggests that the true nature of individuals or groups will be revealed in times of challenge or scrutiny. In this context, the NPP’s internal dynamics will likely continue to unfold as the primaries approach.
