Government Initiates Monthly Allowance for Assembly Members

The Ghanaian government has commenced paying a monthly allowance of GH¢1,300 to Assembly Members nationwide. This initiative, part of the “Resetting Ghana Agenda,” aims to empower local governance structures and enhance project monitoring at the grassroots level.

Key Details:
– Allowance Amount: GH¢1,300 per month
– Total Beneficiaries: 9,085 Assembly Members, both elected and appointed
– Funds Disbursed: GH¢23.6 million for April and May allowances
– Total Allocation: GH¢100 million in the 2025 national budget

Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, announced the development at a press conference on July 14, 2025. He emphasized that the allowance will equip Assembly Members with financial resources and the logistics to monitor government projects effectively.

Government’s Commitment to Decentralization

Reaction from Assembly Members
Many Assembly Members have welcomed the move, describing it as timely and a major morale booster. “This allowance shows that President Mahama respects the work we do in our communities,” one Assembly Member stated.

Implementation and Funding
The Ministry of Local Government has disbursed GH¢23.6 million to cover April and May allowances, with funding from an initial GH¢25 million released by the Ministry of Finance as part of the GH¢100 million allocation in the 2025 Budget.
