Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi Discharged in Adams Mahama Murder Case

Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi, accused of murdering Adams Mahama, former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have been discharged by the High Court in Accra after an 11-year trial. The court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, cited significant delays in the trial and the prosecution’s failure to move the case forward as reasons for the discharge.

The prosecution had alleged that Afoko and Alangdi poured acid on Mahama, leading to his death in May 2015. Afoko was granted bail in February 2025, after spending nearly a decade on remand. The trial had been adjourned multiple times, with the prosecution requesting more time, but ultimately, no progress was made.

The discharge brings an end to a lengthy and controversial legal process that has drawn significant public attention in Ghana. Afoko’s brother, Paul Afoko, a former NPP National Chairman, was suspended from the party in 2015, amidst tensions within the party.
