GTEC Calls Out NaCCA Deputy Director for “Dr.” Title

Accra – The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has sent a formal query to the Acting Deputy Director‑General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), J. R. Achoanya Ayam, demanding proof that he’s entitled to use the academic title “Dr.”

In a letter dated November 4, 2025, GTEC’s Director‑General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, asked Ayam to submit the awarding institution’s name, a copy of his degree certificate and academic transcripts for verification. If the documents aren’t produced, Ayam must stop using “Dr.” on all official correspondence, websites and letterheads.

The commission warned that flouting the rule breaches Ghana’s academic standards and could mislead the public. A copy of the directive has been forwarded to the Ministry of Education for enforcement, with a compliance deadline set for November 10, 2025.

This isn’t the first time GTEC has cracked down on unverified titles. Earlier this year the commission ordered a former BOST chief and a GUTA president to cease using “Dr.” after similar queries.

The case has sparked chatter across social media, with many calling for stricter vetting of academic credentials in public offices. GTEC says it expects full cooperation from Ayam and will continue to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s education
