Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has suspended several doctors and nurses

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has suspended several doctors and nurses following the death of a 29-year-old engineer, Charles Amissah, who was reportedly turned away from three major hospitals in Accra, including Korle Bu, due to a lack of available beds. Amissah was involved in a hit-and-run accident on February 6, 2026, and died after being denied admission at the Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital ¹ ².

The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has launched an investigation into the incident, and the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) is also probing the alleged denial of emergency care. The hospital’s management has assured that it will take disciplinary action against staff found responsible for the engineer’s death.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for accountability and improved emergency care services in Ghana’s hospitals. Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s leading referral center, has been facing challenges, including a recent exodus of skilled health professionals seeking better opportunities abroad.

The hospital’s CEO, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, has previously urged immediate action to address the brain drain and improve working conditions for staff. The incident has raised concerns about the hospital’s ability to provide adequate emergency care and the need for urgent reforms.
