#Law Enforcement by Lawlessness: A Disturbing Trend in Ghana

Ghana, a nation known for its democratic values and respect for human rights, is facing a growing concern – law enforcement by lawlessness. Recent incidents have raised questions about the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights.
Abuse of Power and Excessive Force
The police service has been accused of using excessive force and disregarding human rights, particularly during protests and interrogations. A recent incident involving Judith Yaa Kumah, who alleged that her ear was severed during interrogation by a police officer, has sparked widespread outrage. The Africa Center for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development (CDS Africa) has demanded accountability and called for measures to prevent further abuse of power.
Lack of Trust and Corruption
Ghanaians’ trust in the police service has been eroded due to perceived corruption and unprofessionalism. According to a survey by Afrobarometer, two-thirds of Ghanaians believe that most police officials are corrupt. The survey also found that more than half of respondents reported encounters with the police in the past year, often involving bribery.
The Way Forward
To restore public trust and ensure effective law enforcement, the Ghana Police Service must prioritize professionalism, integrity, and accountability. This includes:
– Training and Capacity Building: Providing police officers with training on human rights, gender-based violence, and community policing.
– Accountability Mechanisms: Establishing robust accountability mechanisms to investigate allegations of police brutality and corruption.
– Community Engagement: Fostering positive relationships with local communities through outreach programs and public engagement.
By addressing these concerns and promoting a culture of respect for human rights, the Ghana Police Service can work towards rebuilding trust and ensuring that law enforcement is carried out in a lawful and professional manner.
