Stampede at El‑Wak Sports Stadium claims the lives of 6 young hopefuls

Accra — A heartbreaking stampede at El‑Wak Sports Stadium on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, has claimed the lives of 6 young hopefuls who were trying to join the Ghana Armed Forces. The tragedy unfolded when thousands of applicants surged toward the entry gates, overwhelming security and triggering a chaotic crush that left dozens injured and six more later succumbing to their wounds.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had extended the recruitment deadline by a week after technical glitches on the online portal left many applicants unable to register  ³. “We extended the deadline to accommodate those who faced difficulties during the initial phase,” said Colonel Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah, Acting Director‑General of Public Relations for the GAF.

Emergency responders rushed the wounded to the 37 Military Hospital, where the deceased were taken to the morgue. Several victims remain in intensive care, and medical staff are working around the clock to stabilise those still fighting for their lives.

Eyewitnesses describe a scene of panic as the crowd surged forward when the gates opened. “People were pushing, shouting, and then suddenly there was a crush. It was terrifying,” one applicant recounted.

Authorities have cordoned off the stadium and blocked major access roads while a full investigation gets underway. The GAF has promised a transparent probe to pinpoint the exact cause—pointing to poor crowd‑control measures and the sheer volume of hopeful recruits as contributing factors.

The nation mourns the loss of these young Ghanaians, and the military has pledged to support the families of the victims as they navigate this devastating aftermath. Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
