It was a night of pride and celebration for Suncity Radio at the Third Bono/Ahafo GJA Awards 2024, held at the Virgin’s Kourt Hotel in Sunyani, as two of its outstanding staff clinched top honors, cementing the station’s dominance in regional broadcasting.
Mr. Lawrence Yeboah Gyan, a respected voice in the newsroom, emerged as a double award winner, taking home the Best Feature Story Award and the coveted title of Best News Anchor (English). His compelling storytelling and command on-air were hailed as exemplary contributions to journalism in the region.
Adding to the station’s triumph, his colleague, Mr. Osei Laar, was crowned Best News Anchor (Twi), a testament to his eloquence, clarity, and professionalism in delivering news in the local language.
The three awards collectively underscored Suncity Radio’s commitment to excellence in journalism and its growing influence in shaping the media landscape in the Bono and Ahafo regions.
The ceremony, which brought together seasoned journalists, media practitioners, and stakeholders, celebrated outstanding achievements across various categories in print, radio, and television.
Regional executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), alongside national representatives, emphasized the need for journalists to uphold ethical standards, pursue truth, and continue playing their vital role in community development.
The victories of the two broadcasters not only highlight individual brilliance but also spotlight Suncity Radio’s consistency in nurturing talent and promoting quality journalism in the region.
Mr Biiya Mukusah Ali of the Daily Graphic won three categories – Best Newspaper Reporter, Best Political Reporter and Best Agro-Ecology Reporter – and was declared the Overall Best Journalist. He received two laptops, plaques and citations as his prize.
Other awardees included Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Gyan of Sky FM, who won Best Feature Reporter- radio, Mr Michael Sarpong Mfum of Channel One TV, who received awards for Best Education Reporter and Best Telecommunication Reporter.
Mr Claud Kumi Abisa of Media General won the Best Health Reporter award, while Ms Jasmine Akwaboah of Moonlite FM, the only female awardee, was adjudged Best Female Journalist of the Year.
Mr Samuel Mensah of Peace FM won the Best Crime Reporter award.
All the awardees, except the Overall Best Journalist, received plaques, certificates and tablets.
