Ukraine is set to partner with Ghana to enhance its border security using advanced drone technology. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is open to helping Ghana secure its borders from jihadist threats after a phone call with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
The proposed partnership involves Ukraine providing Ghana with combat-proven drones for surveillance and monitoring. Ghana has expressed interest in acquiring Ukrainian drone models to strengthen security along its borders with the Sahel region, a hotspot for extremist violence and instability.
Key Aspects of the Partnership:
– Drone Technology: Ukraine will provide Ghana with advanced drone systems for border surveillance and security.
– Financing: Ghana is ready to finance Ukrainian drone production, and Ukraine is willing to help its partners secure their borders.
– Ministerial-Level Meeting: A meeting is scheduled to take place soon to discuss the details of the partnership and potential agreements.
This partnership comes at a critical time for Ghana, which shares over 2,000 kilometers of land borders with Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. The northern frontier with Burkina Faso has become a significant security concern due to the presence of extremist groups.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
The partnership is part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Ghana. The two leaders also discussed cooperation in the agricultural sector and the creation of a food logistics hub in Ghana. Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in drone innovation and deployment, rapidly developing a formidable indigenous drone industry in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion since February 2022.
