Ghana Secures $30 Million Grant from China to Construct Modern Market in Aflao

Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from China to construct a modern market in Aflao, as announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa. The grant is in line with President John Mahama’s promise during the 2024 electioneering campaign.

Key Highlights of the Project:
– Modern Market Construction: The new market will boost economic activity, link the Ho and Lome markets, and improve livelihoods in the area.
– Strategic Location: Aflao is a major West African trading hub, making the market a crucial economic driver for the region.
– Previous Collaboration: A similar grant amount from China was used to construct the impressive Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast during the Mills/Mahama era.

The Signing Ceremony:
The grant agreement was signed on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, signed for the Chinese Government ¹.
This development is part of the growing economic ties between Ghana and China. In recent years, China has invested heavily in Ghana’s infrastructure and economy, including a $750 million grant to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for various development projects.
