John Awuah, CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks, has sparked a heated debate over government priorities in education. Awuah wonders why allowances are still being paid to nursing and teacher trainees when many schools lack basic infrastructure, forcing children to learn under trees.
According to Awuah, the GHS462 million allocated to nursing trainee allowances could be better utilized to address the infrastructure needs of schools. He questions the logic behind paying allowances to trainees who may not even be guaranteed jobs after completing their training.
Awuah’s comments have raised important questions about the effectiveness of government spending in the education sector and highlight the need for a more strategic approach to resource allocation.
