Veteran Kenyan Politician Raila Odinga Passes Away at 80

Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, has died at the age of 80 after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing Ayurvedic treatment in Kerala, India. Odinga, a stalwart of Kenyan politics, had been a key figure in the country’s opposition for decades.

Born on January 7, 1945, Odinga was a member of the Luo tribe and entered parliament in 1992. He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency five times, most recently in 2022, and served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. Odinga was known for his activism, which helped steer Kenya towards multiparty democracy.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.”

Odinga’s legacy is marked by his fight for democracy and his ability to build alliances with former foes. He played a crucial role in ending single-party rule in Kenya and promoting multiparty democracy. His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes, with leaders from across Africa and beyond paying their respects.

“Raila Odinga was a steadfast champion of democracy,” said Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, head of the African Union Commission. “His passing is a loss not just for Kenya, but for the entire continent.”

Odinga’s body is currently at a hospital in Kerala, where he passed away, and will undergo procedures as per protocol. His death leaves a void in Kenyan politics, particularly as the country heads into a potentially volatile campaign ahead of elections in 2027.
