GTEC Publishes List of 62 Unrecognised Institutions, Warns Public on Certificates

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has released a public notice listing 62 tertiary institutions it says are “currently not recognized” due to quality assurance concerns.

The notice, dated Friday, 17th April 2026, advises the general public to “exercise due diligence with regard to any certificates issued by these institutions.”
GTEC is the statutory body mandated under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) to regulate, accredit, and supervise tertiary education in Ghana. Certificates from unrecognised institutions are not accepted for public sector employment, professional licensing, or admission to accredited universities in Ghana.

GTEC’s Advisory
The Commission said the institutions were listed due to “various quality assurance concerns.” It urged students, parents, and employers to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrollment or recruitment.
Under Act 1023, operating an unaccredited tertiary institution in Ghana or advertising unaccredited programmes is an offence. GTEC maintains a list of accredited institutions and approved programmes on its website and at its offices.

What This Means
Certificates from unrecognised institutions are not accepted by the Public Services Commission, Ghana Education Service, professional regulatory bodies, or accredited universities for top-up programmes. Holders of such certificates may apply to GTEC for credential evaluation.
GTEC did not state whether any of the listed institutions have applications pending for accreditation.

Contact
For verification, the public can contact GTEC via its head office in Accra or through http://www.gtec.edu.gh.
